Louis A. Marotti Jr., 51, of Lititz, PA passed away suddenly after a brief illness on March 22, 2024. Lou was born in New Haven, CT and grew up in East Haven, CT. He was valedictorian of his graduating class at Notre Dame High School of West Haven. Lou graduated magna cum laude from Yale University in 1994, and went on to attend the Yale School of Medicine where he earned his MD and a PhD in Neuroscience. Following his residency in Neurosurgery at Yale, Lou completed a spine surgery fellowship at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston, MA. In 2010, Lou joined the practice of Argires & Marotti Neurosurgical Associates of Lancaster, as a partner. For the past fourteen years, he has touched the lives of countless patients and colleagues. Lou was a member of the American Board of Neurological Surgeons, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the Pennsylvania Neurosurgical Society, and the American College of Surgeons. He was Board Certified in Neurological Surgery and was the Chief of the Division of Neurosurgery at Lancaster Regional Medical Center.
Lou savored every drop of his life. He was a lifelong motorsports enthusiast, from dirt bikes and Mustangs in his youth to Ducatis and Ferraris in his later years. He loved racing and wouldn’t miss a formula one race – Ferrari all the way! Lou and his wife, Jill loved music and rocked out to countless live concerts in their almost 20 years together. Lou had a meticulous nature and this was reflected by his tremendous appreciation for anything created by people who dedicated themselves to their craft for the sake of making something the best it could possibly be. His resulting knowledge of watches and watch collection was “insane” (a term he often used). Even his pair of everyday sweatpants were made of the finest Italian fabric from a small family-owned business in Italy. Gin martinis with blue cheese stuffed olives were his favorite but Lou was captivated by wines and spirits from all over the world. Good food was an obsession. Known for his love of steaks, no one knew more about beef than Lou Marotti. After the kids were in bed, you could find Lou in the jacuzzi with a cigar, sipping an Islay scotch, watching You tube’s “One-bite Pizza Reviews.” He just “didn’t want it to end.”
Above all things, Lou loved his family. He met the love of his life, Jill, in 2005 and they have two boys Louis, 8 and Bailey, 6. He is so proud of his boys and honestly believes they are the most beautiful of Gods’ creations. Lou loved his devoted parents, Rita, and Lou, so much. He referred to his mother as “an angel on earth” and was so excited to be taking his dad to see Italy in June. Lou wanted to give his parents the world and was so grateful for their love. He was also very close with his brothers and sister and spoke of them always with love and admiration.
Lou cared about people and always reserved judgement. He gave himself to everyone, if even to his detriment. He always took time with his patients and made sure to listen and teach them about their conditions. He had an innate ability to connect with other people that was so powerful. His humor and lighthearted nature will be remembered fondly. Lou has made such a tremendous positive impact on the lives of so many it can honestly be said that he made the world a better place. Lou will always be remembered as an excellent surgeon, amazing father and husband, the best son, brother, and brother-in-law anyone could ever ask for. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends, and by all who ever knew him.
He is survived by his wife Jill Marotti (Vasi) and sons, Louis A. Marotti, III and Bailey Marotti, as well as his parents, Louis A. Marotti and Rita Marotti, his sister and brother-in-law, Neisha and Michael Scinto, his brothers, Joseph A. Marotti (Ashlee Marotti) and Matthew A. Marotti (Maria Marotti), His Mother-in-Law, Joyce Bailey, Father-in-Law, Mark Vasi, Brother-in-law, Bret Vasi (Krista) and Sister-in-law, Tara Vasi (Matthew) and his nieces and nephews, Noah Marotti, Mya Scinto, Audrey Marotti, Leo Vasi, Eva Vasi, Maeve Sorenson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11AM on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 601 E. Delp Rd, Lancaster, PA 17601. There will not be a visitation prior to Mass on Tuesday. The Mass will be livestreamed via the church website, www.sjnlancaster.org. Interment will be private in Landis Valley Cemetery. Family and friends will be received from 4-7PM on Monday, April 1, 2024 at Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, www.stjude.org.

Rest in peace Dr Marotti. I knew Dr. Marotti because he used to live right across the street from me and my family for 13 years up until July of 2023. He lived there my whole life (I am 14). I have very fond memory’s of talking with Dr. Marotti and playing with Louis and Bailey (his two sons) and always getting to see his dog Enzo.
I still remember the day he got his corvette. I was outside doing something and i saw him pull into his driveway with the corvette. I went over to talk and see the car and he took me for a ride around the block in it. Before his corvette I believe he had an Alfa Romeo, and before that he had a Maserati and we would alway say “there’s Dr. Marotti in his Maserati”. He loved his cars, especially his Ferrari, but he loved his family more.
That is just one of the many memories i have of Dr. Marotti.

Our sincerest condolences to Dr. Marotti’s wife, 2 young sons and staff. What a tragic loss of a wonderful surgeon and wonderful man. He operated many times on my husband’s back in an effort to give him the best life possible. Without a doubt Dr. Marrotti was the very finest doctors I have ever had the pleasure to meet. Despite only having known him for a little over three years, he was truly like a family member, and my wife and I were saddened to hear the news of his passing when we were at another doctor appointment today. I haven’t seen him in a few months, but was about to write him to let him know that I’d finally finished recovering from the cervical spine surgery he performed on me in 2022. He assured me that I’d be fully recovered one day, and I wanted to thank him for all his kind words and excellent care. His family will be in our prayers.

I have known Dr. Marotti since 2010 when he 1st operated on my back . He performed 2 back surgeris on my back & implanted a pain reducer. Dr Marotti was the consummate Dr. , he took as much time as you needed with you to explain your condition & what he was recommending. This is such a great loss to his patients ,family & friends. Dr. Marotti fixed my back in January, 2019. I was one of the last surgeries at the old St. Joe’s hospital. After coming out of surgery, Dr. Marotti said, “I spent an extra hour on you!” Evidentally, my spinal nerves were bunched up like tangled dental floss and he had to pull them apart strand by strand. I am now pain free and swim 2 miles 3x’s a week. I am forever grateful to Dr. Marotti and want his family to know that his life made a difference in the lives of others.

I still can’t believe this! 😪 My heart is broken like so many others. I can only slightly imagine the pain his family and close friends are feeling. Dr. Marrotti was my Neurosurgeon and did 4 spine surgeries on me and quite literally saved my life. When I had to go on disability and end my career he graciously wrote a letter to support me. My heart goes out to this dear man’s family. A trajic loss that will be felt for years to come. I am an ICU RN and Dr Marotti did my spinal fusion June 2023. Within 3 weeks of my appointment with him, he had me in the OR and preformed his great skill at repairing the severe damage my spine endured. He was the whole package…a great surgeon, a kind man with a wonderful disposition. I just saw Dr Marotti in early March, and I always thanked him for his knowledge and surgical skills…but at this last appointment I thanked him for his craftsmanship, for truly he was a skilled craftsman which took much dedicated time investment on his part. Sending much love to his wife and children and family, and to the office staff and Scott and Adam. What a heartbreaking loss. Ate meals we couldn’t afford, were on a raft off the coast of Thailand, took an 18 hour drive for a 2 hour dinner, he once saved me from sinking in quick sand. Dr Marotti operated on my neck twice in 2015 and 2020. I cried for him and his family today when I heard this. What I know of him during the years he cared for me, he IS a fine good man, the best of men. I am greatful to God that DR Marotti was able to patch me back together and that I knew him. He was the best surgeon in my opinion in the country . He was soon to repair a issue with my husbands neck ! He told me when I was I was injured not to do surgery from anyone or I wouldn’t come out better for doing so ! He said he would figure a way to do my surgery when he can ( 08 and still no one has been good enough to do the repair ! ) he had a heart of gold and always listened and did what he think was best . He was an Angel on earth and none can take his place ever ! Me and my husband are better medically because of his care. This breaks my heart for his wife and children ! He was a amazing man and will never be forgotten ! When a man is this giving and caring in life it’s hard to figure out the why’s . Why did he pass , why him . How do you talk about the loss of God’s gift to so many people. The family he grew up with. The love of his life and the family they created. Colleagues he encountered throughout his career. The many patients who loved him. Employees who had the highest regatds for him. My experience was as a patient. He never treated me any less than #1 patient of the day. Please accept my condolences for your loss. The news of Dr. Marotti’s passing has left me devastated and heartbroken. Dr. Marotti was one of the smartest, most kind, and most generous people that I had ever met. I looked to him as my mentor and a role model in the field of medicine. He was the person who inspired me the most to pursue a career in neurosurgery, and I aspire to do as much good in the world as he has.
I first crossed paths with Dr. Marotti during my sophom*ore year of high school. Intrigued by neurosurgery, I reached out to him for an interview as part of a class project. Despite his busy schedule, he graciously accepted my interview request. What was supposed to be a brief conversation turned into a three-hour discussion where Dr. Marotti patiently and enthusiastically answered all 60 of my questions. We spoke about everything from the challenges of completing 24 hour shifts to the joy of curing someone of their painful ailments. Seeing the excitement in my eyes about neurosurgery, he lent me a neuroanatomy book that was gifted to him by his favorite medical school professor and offered to let me watch him operate in the OR whenever I would like. This interaction truly exemplifies who Dr. Marotti was: he gave as much as he could to others, and he always looked to pass on the knowledge that he had garnered to anyone who wanted to learn. It didn’t matter to him that I was a random highschooler, he still put so much thought into our three hour conversation, let me borrow one of his most prized possessions, and offered to let me shadow him despite having a busy schedule.
Since our first encounter, he has let me watch over 100 procedures of his and sit through hundreds of hours of clinical appointments. Not once did he leave any one of my questions unanswered, and he never made me feel like an inconvenience or a burden. His commitment to his patients was unwavering, and his genuine care for their well-being was evident in every interaction. The world has truly lost a remarkable individual in Dr. Marotti. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the many doctors that he has inspired. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Rohan Kurian.

I am very saddened and shocked to have read and the newspaper that are Dr. Marotti had suddenly passed away. Many years ago I did see Dr. Marotti twice for my lower back pain and he recommended instead of surgery that an injection or two would be better in my case. He was truly a wonderful doctor!! Just to add a little humor, when I was making the first appointment to see Dr. Marotti and the receptionist and the nurse that I was speaking to,told me that he was not married, and at the hospital, he was given the name “Hottie Marotti”!!…..and we all laughed because it was so funny and very true! He was so very good looking and single at the time. Then before I have the appointment, I saw him at STAUFFERS’s with a beautiful woman on ROHRERSTOWN Road and I couldn’t help myself, but keep staring at him because I thought she was very lucky to have him as a boyfriend. When I first saw Dr. Marotti about a week later and it was my first appointment. I told him that I saw him at STAUFFERS with a beautiful girl and he said he was dating her for a while and it’s been six years, and I said, it’s about time you put a ring on it and think about getting married and he laughed and said you know what I think you’re right! So I believe after that everything came true for Jill and for Dr. Marotti also…..he then became not only a very, very great surgeon and doctor, but from what I hear, a wonderful husband and father and friend to all. He was a friend and a fellow doctor and saved my life after a life threatening back infection; he sat with my wife for over an hour when i came out of surgery surgeons typically dont do that; He was smart sharp but also a philospher and a true beautiful spirit. I had the honor of getting to know Lou Marotti when he was applying to the MD/PhD Program at Yale. We immediately formed a bond and I was lucky enough to call him a friend. He was gentle, humble, intelligent, caring and very funny. I loved his passion for good food! It was very evident he would make an incredible neurosurgeon who would be loved by his patients. This is sad. Dr. Marotti was the best surgeon. He has helped me to be as pain free as I can and able to move again after 1 neck and 2 back surgeries he has done. Plus the help with referrals for many injections. He was great. He took the time to listen and explain things. Very understanding and helpful. I would say Dr. Marotti was “down to earth” and kind. He always took his time with you, never rushed. Unlike other doctors, Dr. Marotti never rushed into surgery. He always ran all the tests and gave you options. He helped me one time and did so avoiding surgery, while another doctors wanted surgery. This set him apart from others that only want to put you under the “knife” so to say. He was about helping you, not jumping into surgery. He let you think about things and never once requested and answer on the spot. He was kind and understanding and never judged you. Besides the many surgeries he had done for myself, the many neck and back surgeries he has done for my wives, he was just outstanding. We can not thank him enough for everything he has done for all of us. There is no words to explain the loss we feel. Hands down Dr. Marotti was the best and will be greatly missed. May he RIP.

I learned of this loss the morning we lost a brilliant man when the office called to cancel my upcoming appointment with Dr Lou for my 4 month follow up. I was numb all day. This was the second time the gifted hands were to help me . I was doing well after the first lumbar fusion until I fell flat on my face in the city! Long story short, new MRI showed new issues including a disc herniation he said he’d never seen one like in his career! But his patience, God-given skill and expertise got the job done, as I continue recovering and doing pretty well. He made sure to get it done just before he left for Vegas for the Grand Prix!
Reading his accomplishments was truly amazing. As an RN myself, I’m very aware of those in healthcare and how I’m treated. As stated in the obit, he explained every detail to me and my husband and showed us where the problems were, thoroughly explained how he could help. And then, did it all! You will be sorely missed in this town!
My deepest sympathies to Jill and your sweet boys, who will need lots of love. My prayers to you all. To Lou Sr and Rita, I can truly say I know how it feels to lose a child, no matter their age.
May God bless and keep His arms wrapped tightly around you as you navigate this difficult journey, you are on my daily prayer list.

My wife had three prior surgeries for her lower back with the fourth being the charm performed by Dr. Marotti……..thank-you so very much. I had the blessing and honor of working with Dr. Marotti for 13 years. In 2011, I started at Lancaster Regional Medical Center. Dr. Marotti adopted me onto the neuro team and I had the privilege of scrubbing in with him for surgery three days out of the week, often over eight hours a day. I quickly learned that Dr. Marotti had the patience of an angel. He was so meticulous in his work, yet he was as cool as a cucumber. This created a wonderful culture within the neuro team. Dr. Marotti is the most knowledgeable and caring physician that I ever worked for and had an aura that was evident that he had strong faith in Jesus without him having to tell people. Dr. Marotti loved everyone, especially his family. I loved listening to him talk about his childhood and family.
He loves his family to the moon and back and is so proud of them. We often used to talk about our families at work. He was so proud of Lou for his cautious and inquisitive personality. He was so proud of Bailey for how strong and strong willed he is. We would always joke that Bailey would grow up and be a professional athlete so he wouldn’t have to work. Every Wednesday we would love to hear about the adventure of date night with Jill. We loved to hear how excited he was to go out on a date with Jill and where they would go. He was especially excited when they would go out to gibraltars, which was his favorite restaurant. He would often talk about his parents and siblings who he loved so much.He would also talk about his childhood and being an altar boy. The most recent talk was how excited he was to plan his upcoming trip to Italy for his mom, dad and siblings. He loved his family so much and talked about them whenever we would work together.
Dr. Marotti was also an amazing physician. This is no secret to any one but he was my most favorite physician ever. When in surgery he took his time and gave the most intricate and compassionate care to each and every one of his patients. Dr. Marotti completed even the most complicated surgeries with patience and ease. He worked as an advocate for every one of his patients and truly cared about each and every one of them. Prior to every surgery, he took his time to talk to every single patient to give clear and concise instructions to every thing he was about to do. After he was finished with every case, he blessed every patient. His actions showed he cared deeply about his patients and his patients loved him as well. I would have patients tell me on multiple occasions how much they loved him.
Along with being a physician he was also my boss. When I worked for him as a surgical technologist he had so much patience with me while I learned his preferences and how he did his cases. Both Dr. Marotti and Adam were an efficient team together and I was so happy to be included. When Dr. Marotti adopted me onto his team. I finally found a place where I felt that I belonged. Soon, I started nursing school with great help from Dr. Marotti from writing my letters of recommendation for nursing school and recommendation letters for scholarships. Without Dr. Marotti, I most likely would not be a nurse today. I owe credit for my success to him. I am forever grateful. After becoming a nurse, I changed roles however I stayed on his team. Unfortunately, Lancaster Regional shut down, then we were transferred to UPMC, I then followed him to the Advanced Surgery Center. Dr. Marotti displayed more patience with me than any other surgeon that I worked with. He was always approachable. We could always talk to him about anything such as questions when we were unsure of how to handle or do something. Also, approach him with any problem without fear of retaliation or anger. He was so easy to talk to and so approachable. Dr. Marotti made his staff feel like we had a voice and were cared about rather than just a number.He used to spoil us by buying lunch and planning these amazing holiday and staff parties with great food. He also had a great sense of humor and could make light of any situation. He was also so much fun. I will never forget him singing ACDC during karaoke at my wedding. He was a good singer. I will also always remember him helping us to plan pranks on other physicians at the center.
Dr. Marotti was a great steward of everything that God gave to him. I was so blessed to get to work for him and get to know him. Although this is tremendously hard, I take great comfort in knowing he had faith in Jesus. With how abruptly God brought him home, I can only fathom the type of work he is doing in heaven.I will miss his great sense of humor, patience and every other amazing trait that he had. My sincere condolences to his family, I know he is watching you from heaven.

I’m in complete shock, Lou was truly a good friend. We could go months without speaking to one another and pick up as if no time had passed.
We shared great times together at Goodwood, at the Italian Embassy in DC etc. doing our Italian car adventures. I was just looking at the photos the other day and planned to call him. I so regret having waited.
I owe him a debt of gratitude as he helped guide me through my wife’s medical issues. Jill my deepest condolences, Lou was a very special person. I will miss him greatly.

I knew Louie from being good friends with his sister Neisha. I don’t remember a summer I didn’t spend all the hot summer days over The Marotti’s in their octagon shaped pool. Many great times were spent over their house. I am devastated by Louie’s passing…I laid awake last night remembering him & The Marotti family…of course the tears came because Louie was such a great friend! Lou, Rita, Neisha, Mattie, Joey & please forgive me but I never had the pleasure of meeting Louie’s wife or children as I still live in Connecticut but I am so very sorry for your loss! I met Dr. Marotti back in June 2014. And he immediately made me feel very comfortable with his knowledge and professionalism. But also with his genuine care.He performed my back surgery less than two weeks later, and it was an amazing experience with instant relief.I looked forward to follow up appointments just to talk to him. His bedside manner was very good, and you could sense his love for life. He was so excited to tell me about the birth of his children. The surgery that he performed on me was complex in my mind, but routine for him. And I haven’t had any pain for ten years now. I will miss him if I ever need another surgery.

Lou Marotti was an exceptional gift from God to his patients, family and friends. This guy, who was such a brilliant star of goodness, joy, compassion and love, is gone. I just cannot believe it. Here are some stories to be shared on how he influenced my life.
Lou and I were medical students together and later when I became a neurosurgery resident, I was assigned the onerous assignment of working on neurosurgery book chapter with one of the faculty. I reached out to Lou (still med student) to work on this together and I can only summarize the experience as unmitigated joy as he brought tremendous hilarity to this painful task. Later, Lou came on the neurosurgery service as a junior resident when I was chief resident and took it upon himself to organize my “change of chiefs” party. I remember his delight in arranging the menu which he insisted on being “whole roasted pig.” Lou shared his love of good food and good life by taking all of us residents to Joseph’s steakhouse in Bridgeport Connecticut. These good times I will never forget. They were the best times.
Later in my current neurosurgery practice in Springfield Missouri, Lou came to interview with us. My partners and the hospital leadership became immediately enamored with him because of his obvious intellect and easygoing charm. We took him to a steakhouse that he had researched, at his request, “Doe’s Eat House. ” He knew everything about the place, “Bill Clinton’s favorite steak house”, “wet aged steaks,” etc. We watched him finish 2-1/2 pound ribeye. We were amazed.
I have 2 kids, one that is 12 the other 14, and in the last few days I have been sharing with them some of these stories and in turn, the qualities that made this exceptional man. I shared with the kids, how Lou Marotti brightened our complex journey in medicine and in life. He showed us how to be the best doctor, the best husband, father, and friend.

I sit here reading this through tears. He was my Dr, 2 back surgeries. I see he was way more than that from his obituary. What an amazing human being. We see our Dr’s and think they are Dr’s 24-7. Dr. Marotti operated on a family member over 5 yrs ago & we visited him yearly afterwards. For how busy he must have been, he always made us feel like we were patient #1 at each visit. When I had my first visit with him, he was kind, he listened, and explained things in detail in fact so much detail I thought I was gonna be able to read X-rays and MRI’s {I can not, lol} He made you feel that you were a part of your health and that felt good. Dr. Marotti’s smile instantly drew you into his warmth and kindness. I pray for his family to find peace during this awful time. Dr. Marotti will be missed here on earth by many.

The world lost an incredible man and surgeon. He was so kind and soft spoken and easy to work for. He will be so missed by all who knew him and loved him. There will be many prayers for comfort for his family from all of us who were lucky enough to know him and work for him.

I was one of Dr Marotti’s first patient way back in 2010. He was an amazing neurosurgeon with the best bed side manor. He did numerous surgeries on my neck the latest being 2/13/24. He will be missed! Sending much love and prayers to his wife and children and his family and friends.
