'Moron' Paredes set upon by Dutch
WWOS staff
Argentina might have qualified but a reckless act by Argentina's Leandro Paredes sparked fierce criticism from commentators and fans.
It sparked chaotic scenes in the second half when Paredes fouled Nathan Aké before booting the ball directly at the Dutch bench in the 87th minute.
That move saw the benches clear as the Netherlands players charged onto the field, while Virgil van Dijk ran across the field and body-slammed Paredes to further escalate the situation.
Paredes was given a yellow card for his role in the fracas, but escaped punishment for kicking the ball but fouled for the challenge on Ake.
"It's all going off," former England striker Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 Live.
"What a moron. What is he thinking? Leandro Paredes just lost it.
"He has caused a riot there.
"He is lucky. The foul was a booking in itself."
Sky Sports' Adam Bate described it as "ill-tempered" and agreed that Paredes was "lucky to dodge" a double booking.
In the end it had no impact on the result as the match went into extra time, with Argentina coming out on top 4-3 in the shootout.
Record broken as 18 cards handed out
Matt Bungard
You might remember the 'Battle of Nuremberg' back in the 2006 World Cup, widely remembered as one of the most ill-disciplined games in World Cup history.
Today, a record from that game was broken - the 16 yellow cards dished out then were topped by two today, after an addition two cautions were given during or after the penalty shootout.
Argentina advance!
Matt Bungard
On the balance of play you have to say they deserve it - and the moment this shootout started there only looked like one winner.
Emi Martinez is known as a fantastic penalty stopper, and he proved that in this shootout - saving each of the first two kicks from Virgil van Dijk, and Steven Berghuis. The next three Dutch takers each converted, but it wasn't enough.
The first three Argentinian players - Lionel Messi, Leandro Paredes, Gonzalo Montiel - all scored before Enzo Fernandez missed, but on match point, Lautaro Martinez smashed it home.
That was enough for a 4-3 win.

Big, big block from Virgil van Dijk!
That's the first real chance of extra time, and the cutback is met by the Inter Milan man Lautaro Martinez at the near post who lashes it goalwards - the keeper would have been no chance, but the captain was there to block it out for a corner, which is then cleared.
Five minutes to go in extra time. Still level.
Netherlands v Argentina LIVE SCORES | No goals in the first half of extra time
Matt Bungard
Nothing of note in that first extra period of 15 minutes, really.
Argentina with a bit more offensive desire but no chances at either end - will we get a late goal, or the second penalty shootout of the day?
Netherlands v Argentina LIVE SCORES |THE DUTCH HAVE DONE IT!

Unbelievable - the Netherlands get a free kick on the edge of the area in the TENTH minute of stoppage time and instead of going direct, Steven Berghuis runs up like he's going to shoot, and instead rolls a soft pass to Wout Weghorst, standing next to the defensive wall.
Argentina are caught completely by surprise and Weghorst finishes calmly with nobody marking him - and on the last kick of the game, it's 2-2!
We're going to extra time!

Netherlands v Argentina LIVE SCORES | Penalty for Argentina, Messi converts

Great work from Marcos Acuna - he draws the foul superbly from a desperate Denzel Dumfries, and the referee has no choice but to point to the spot.
Up steps Lionel Messi...the keeper stays in the middle, and Argentina's superstar smashes it into the side netting and that should be game over!
